Systematic Reviews: Faculty Librarian Support

Introduction and Pathway for researchers starting a Systematic Review

Faculty Librarian Support for Students

Starting a systematic review can be sometimes daunting, especially when undertaken on a sole basis. Faculty Librarians are able to support you via Training in Systematic Literature Searching, and via One-To-One sessions.

However, be aware always that a good systematic review is systematic, that means that it is following published protocols and guidance, some very well established. All the stages are well researched, and there are plenty of published examples to follow. By creating a systematic review you will also gain significant experience and gain transferable research skills in an increasingly high-demand area.

If you read this guide as an introduction, then if you feel you require further support please Book an Appointment with your Faculty Librarian

Attribution of Faculty Librarian support

You are not expected, nor should you work alone on producing a systematic review, however, it is important to attribute support received from Faculty Librarians. An example section of text in your protocol or writeup can take the form:

The search strategy, database selection, and strategy testing were produced in conjunction with 'Insert name of librarian', Faculty Librarian, Lancaster University

Some journals do not allow contributors to be credited by name, in this case, please replace with (as an example)  'Faculty Librarian for Health and Medicine', Lancaster University. This allows us to track library research impact and offer a better service.

Faculty Librarian Support for Researchers

Librarians can support you with training on producing a systematic literature search, creating a search strategy and importing into reference management software such as EndNote or Mendeley.

We can also advise on a scoping search in order to identify a suitable topic for a systematic review, and how to identify in-progress systematic reviews if you are considering a subject and wish to avoid duplication.

A mention or reference to the faculty librarian team is always appreciated!

For members of staff who need assistance devising searches for a review, we are happy to meet to discuss your project and offer advice and training. We don't currently offer a literature searching or information specialist service, or have a chargeable service that you can cost in to your project. At some times of year we may have more capacity than others. Please email facultylibrarians@lancaster.ac.uk to discuss your needs.
