Findng books in the Library

The main classmark for resources on Politics is R; for  Philosophy  A; and for Religious Studies P.

Relevant material will also be found in other subject areas, for example International Organisations (QZ), History (M, N, O) and Law (S).

Books are organised by classmark within each major subject areas. Politics books are arranged on the shelf in the following order:

  Capitals    RD
  Numbers    RD7
  Stops    RD.E
  Lower case    RDea

  Numbers are ordered decimally, ie 1, 11, 2, 21 3

Numbers, stops and lower case letters are added to the main letter code to describe in more detail a book's topic. For example, a book on parliamentary election results in Ireland would have a classmark of RDev.YE1. This classmark is made up of: broad subject - RD is practical politics; location - ev covers Ireland; detailed subject - YE is parliamentary elections; material type - 1 is a reference book. An author mark in brackets, generally the first letter of the author's surname, is normally added at the end. It is used to make it easier to find a particular book if there are lots at the same classmark.

How do I find resources for my course?

You will usually find that your lecturer provides a resource list (or reading list) on the module's Moodle site. Look out for a link to a Resource list, or specific readings.
