All print books are allocated a classmark, a code describing the book's topic, which is printed on the spine or cover of the book. It is used to order the books on the shelves and bring together at the same place books on the same topic. Our system uses capital letters to indicate major subject areas. Classmark for resources on Criminology start with KDQO - Criminology and KDQP - Penology. Further letter, numbers, stops and lower case letters are added to the main letter code to describe in more detail a book's topic.
Books are arranged on the shelf in the following order:
Capitals | KDQO |
Numbers | KDQO7 |
Stops | |
Lower Case | KDQOdw |
Numbers are ordered decimally, ie 1, 11, 2, 21, 3
