Level 7 Case Study - Design

LICA420 Design Research Methods. Defining and refining research questions using library resources and library research skills. 

In this 3-hour seminar academic staff and Faculty Librarians work together to help postgraduate students to define and refine research questions using Library resources and Library research skills for their first term project focusing on ‘liveable’ Lancaster. In this session students address questions such as: What types of information will I need? Where will I find the information I need? and what terminology will I use to find information? 

Level 7 Case Study - Linguistics

LING402 Postgraduate Academic Study Skills. Dissertation research facilitated by a Faculty Librarian. 

In this two-hour session facilitated by the Library postgraduate students work with a Faculty Librarian to actively research their dissertation. Students focus on their personal area of research and can gather papers for their literature review. They are encouraged to use a range of resources, including Library catalogues, specialist databases as well as open access and publicly available information to find the specific data they need. This session runs in the second term and follows an introductory lecture session on the library and library research skills delivered in the first term. 

Level 7 Case Study - Law

Law Postgraduates Introduction to Lancaster Library

This 1 hour in-person workshop for incoming postgraduate (taught) law students explores what postgraduate research in a university library looks like. The Faculty Librarian covers the following - discovering library resources at Lancaster, specialist legal databases and search techniques, the importance of academic information and referencing, and signposts professional certification on legal databases Westlaw and Lexis+. Students complete a short research challenge designed to give them direct experience of the sources covered in the workshop.
