Lancaster University guidelines on using generative ai

Principles for the educational application of generative AI issued by Lancaster University

A small group led by Casey Cross, the University Associate Dean for Students, has produced some guiding principles for University staff on using generative AI. This is a fast-moving area, and these principles (which adhere to principles put forward by the QAA) are designed to assist departments in their approach to AI. It is not as simple as saying, “let’s ban it”. It is embedded into search engines, Office 365 and lots of applications. AI will become as routine as the use of a calculator.

We are issuing these principles which you will find below as initial guidance for the academic year 2023-24 and we strongly endorse their use. This year, this group and others from across the University will develop these principles into a policy that the University will formally approve through its ordinary governance structures. The group is also developing practical guides for staff and students which will be shared at a later date. We hope these resources will be valuable as we get to grips with AI.
