A guide to library resources for Medicine

NHS Athens username and password

Medical students will be registered for an NHS Athens username and password before you go on placement. This will provide access to subscribed ejournals and databases paid for by the NHS and available to all employees. 

Access includes these databases which Lancaster University does not currently provide:

  • BMJ Best Practice (including the mobile app)
  • British Nursing Index
  • HMIC
  • EmCare

These are available through NHS Journals and databases with an NHS Athens username and password for eligible users only.

If you are prompted to choose an institution, choose NHS in England. A top resource to support clinical decision-making drawing on the latest evidence-based research. Includes a mobile app, medical calculators, evidence searches and drug information. 

Health Care Databases Advanced Search (HDAS)

This database provides access to several databases which are available at Lancaster University, such as Medline, CINAHL and PsycINFO. 

In addition, there are two additional databases which you can access with your NHS Athens account when you are on placement:

Health Research Premium

Search an extensive range of health and social care publications and evidence-based resources.

NHS Library and Knowledge Services

Every NHS Trust has its own Library & Knowledge Services, which complements the information provided by NHS Evidence, which is available to all NHS employees. You can access print materials as well as online, and you can get help from friendly Library & Knowledge Services staff.
